The processes of our brains are both complex and flawed. Neuroscience and psychology can teach us how to make better use of our brains.

1. Mental Illusions

The Monkey Business Illusion

Video / ByDaniel Simons
This video was made for a ground-breaking and now well known study conducted by psychologists Christopher Chabris and Daniel Simons. Volunteers were asked to count how many times the players in the white t-shirts passed the ball. I'm sure that you'll have no trouble with this, so go ahead and watch the video now. The results of the study clearly showed how our brains routinely trick us. For further examples of brain tricks and how we can minimise their negative impact, read Christopher and Daniel's book The Invisible Gorilla .

2. Predictability

How Predictable Are You?

Video / ByRichard Wiseman
We want to believe that we make logical, rational and considered decisions and choices, but in this video Richard Wiseman, author of Quirkology: The Curious Science of Everyday Lives illustrates that our choices are quite predictable. I have to admit that I thought my choices would be different and unique from the masses, but I was very wrong.

3. Attentional Misdirection

Neuroscience Meets Magic

Video / ByScientific American
Magic is just for children and the gullible. Right? Neuroscientists Stephen Macknik and Susana Martinez-Conde have been studying magicians because they believe that magic can shed some light on how our brain processes can be manipulated. So how easily can your attention be misdirected? Read more in their book Sleights of Mind .

4. Motivation

Drive: The surprising truth about what motivates us

Video / ByThe RSA
It is generally believed that people are motivated by money. And while there is some truth to this, money is not a real motivator. It appears that what drives us to perform at our best is autonomy, mastery, and purpose. You can delve further into the subject of drive in Daniel Pink's best-selling book .

5. Decisions

Making Smarter Decisions

Video / ByInc
In this video, Nobel Laureate, Daniel Kahneman talks about his book Thinking, Fast and Slow . Are you predominantly a fast or a slow thinker? Is one better than the other? And when should you be adopting these different styles of thinking to make the best decisions.
